Summer Solstice is here and I’m raring for a wild summer of sharing, fun, and adventure! Hope you can join me…

June 20-24
Solstice weekend I return to New Renaissance Bookshop in Portland, Oregon to teach my longest standing class, since 1995, Beginning Tarot. This offering is complimented with my preliminary talk, now new and improved with a visually illustrative PowerPoint presentation on The Sacred Journey of Your Soul – through the major arcana of the Tarot, now available as a DVD. I look forward to three days of private sessions with all the wonderful spirits who grace my cards for readings.

July 12-14
Next on my hot summer list is the Oregon Country Fair (OCF) in Veneta, just west of Eugene, Oregon. OCF is one of the best known and most delightful outdoor fairs. Our booth, The Mothership, is the largest crafts booth with five readers, from Astrology and Tarot to Mandala drawings and Dreamwork, and over 20 bodyworkers with a diversity of modalities, including Breema, Thai Massage, Lomi Lomi, Chair Massage, Foot Spa, Reflexology, Deep Tissue, and many more. The Mothership (M-55) can be found off Chela Mela Meadow on Wooten Way, between the Left Bank and the Odditorium. We are open on Thursday afternoon to serve fair folks. Please “Like” our Facebook page and get the latest news….OCF Mothership.

July 27-28
The high point of my summer is the Annual Tarot Retreat, now entering it’s 17th year, shining brightly this time with the theme of “XVII The Star”. Nestled in the forest of the Central Oregon Coast, I have hosted this gathering of Tarot lovers each year as we explore and celebrate our deepening relationship with Tarot wisdom from an experiential perspective. A wonderful organic dinner is provided from the Earth Heaven Retreat garden and camping is free! Be sure to visit my website for more information. You can download the registration form HERE.

August 3-4
As if that wasn’t enough, the next weekend Yachats hosts the Pathways to Transformation psychic fair and alternative marketplace. After initiating the seed of this event with the local psychic fairs I produced several times a year, Violet and Sinclair of Chuckling Cherubs have taken the lead, expanding this exciting event into a popular summer destination for many in the Pacific Northwest. My little spot in the NE corner of the main room provides a warm and supportive space for rejuvenating your spirit. Saturday around 1:30 pm I will be offering “An Introduction to the Petit Lenormand” in the Speaker Room.

August 17-18
SF-BATS has moved to San Jose, California, an hour south of San Francisco. I happen to like this move since it takes me closer to Santa Cruz, my previous home. I have lots of friends in Santa Cruz….can’t wait to get back to Santa Cruz…HaHa. The BatQueen, aka Thalassa, has worked her magic to produce another wonderful opportunity to mingle with our Tarot co-hearts and study a diversity of card and divination subjects. Come by to say “Hello” at my vendor table where I will be offering my book, An Introduction to Transformative Tarot Counseling, my Tarot History poster/chart, the new DVD from my webinar Sacred Journey of the Soul – through the major arcana of the Tarot and Transformative Tarot Consulting™ readings.

LakeDistrict-Keswick

For my European friends, I hope to connect with you in person on this trip. Feel free to drop me an email and arrange times to visit. (mail@TarotCounseling.org)

October 12-13
Back in the states, I’m offering private classes and sessions in Dallas, Texas. Please contact me for more information about these rare opportunities, or check Katrina’s Schedule on my website.

October 18-20
I am presenting, again, at TarotCon-Dallas 2013 and very excited to be offering a popular new visual PowerPoint, “Sexual Symbolism in Tarot.”

Me-Tarot-Beloved
OCTOBER 28, 2013

“Tarot, Magic, & Transformation” introduces the elements that promote a more powerful reading for yourself and your clients.

Katrina developed her unique style of reading over the past 20 years based on her studies of transformative modalities and their specific steps to support change.

As with most of her teachings, this webinar/DVD explores practical, psychological and spiritual motifs that can be applied to deepen your Tarot work. Influences such as the research of Swiss Analyst, Carl Jung, to the magical understandings of Israel Regardie of the Golden Dawn, contribute to the structural foundation of this developmental philosophy.
—Learn the four stages of change
—Explore these four stages from a variety of sources, from philosophy and psychology to classic literature, theater, and film
—Participate in the individual exercises demonstrated
—Ask questions during the live webinar

The material presented complements and enhances the concepts introduced in Katrina’s book, An Introduction to Transformative Tarot Counseling – the High Art of Reading

Essential information for all levels of Tarot experience, from novice to expert, is introduced. Helpful handouts are provided.

Linda Marson at Global Spiritual Studies has put together a great program that offers you three options:
1) Sign on for the live class and participate in the “chat” room ($25 AUD), and/or
2) purchase the DVD with the same visuals from the live presentation, after the class has been recorded and processed ($25 + S/H AUD), or
3) purchase access to an online feed that you can view from more than one computer in your home or business ($22 AUD). This is a great option for those of us who have a computer, but also like to use our iPad (or similar technology).

“Sacred Journey of Your Soul – through the major arcana of the Tarot” my most popular class, is now more exciting as a webinar. In the webinar format I am able to enrich this presentation with many visual demonstrations via the PowerPoint presentation that is displayed throughout the class.

In this online tarot class I explore the Tarot’s journey as Pathwork on the individual, collective, and universal levels, highlighting practical, psychological and spiritual motifs that can be applied to deepen your Tarot work.

The material presented complements and enhances work with Tarot Numerology, as presented by Mary Greer in her book, Who Are You in the Tarot?

Greatest Tarot Tour….ever!!

Tarot Tour 2013 was a huge success! In five weeks I visited four European countries and spent the last week in Dallas, Texas. Here are some of the highlights from this fabulous journey.

IMG_3390I kicked off my adventure with two days of reading at New Renaissance Bookshop in Portland, Oregon. My first client graciously allowed me to photograph her amazing tattoos. Why would I be interested in tattoos? I have discover an uncanny synchronicity between many clients’ life cards (also known as birth card in Tarot Numerology) and primary tattoos they have chosen to adorn upon their bodies. More to this story, so stay tuned.

IMG_3469Afterwards, I flew overseas to England as I was a guest speaker at TarotCon-UK. It took three flights, a train, and a lovely private shuttle ride from Marcus Katz to arrive at Keswick in the Lake District. I immediately felt right at home with rolling green fields and mountains all around. This is an enchanting part of northwest England, so much like the Pacific Northwest of the US where I live. Only we have many more trees who are much taller.

Our gracious hosts, Tali Goodwin and Marcus, set up us teachers at a classic B & B named Greta Hall. The breakfast faeries would quietly deliver a beautiful and healthy feast each morning. This little Taurus gal was in heaven with my special needs being met with luscious soy yogurt and gluten-free bread.

IMG_6003 Corrine Kenner and I were the two US teachers and enjoyed our free-time exploring the quaint village of Keswick with its typical British pubs and sweet little shops. Everyone was friendly and helpful and I could understand most of what was said. We found a hilarious, typically British thank you card for Tali and Marcus. Wish I could post the photo. There was a second choice, something to do with an invisibility cloak, that kept us laughing for days. The image is indelibly etched in my brain.

IMG_3559We stumbled upon an antique show where I found this unique Marseille Tarot plate. If anything happens to me, this gem goes to Corrine….haha.

TarotCon-UK is held in the Theater by the Lake, a wonderful community theater within a short walk of the lake. We filled the meeting room with delightful Tarot students from the US to Portugal and Italy. UK was well represented.

Kim Huggens & Katrina creating "Sigils"

“Sigils” Kim Huggens & Katrina

It was so much fun meeting Facebook Tarot friends in person, a theme throughout my trip. Such an honor teaching on the same roster as Corrine, Kim Huggens, Camelia Elias, Bent Sorensen, Janine Worthington, and of course, Marcus and Tali. Every presentation was top notch with exciting discoveries. My classic “Tarot, Magic, and Transformation” class (now on DVD) concluded the conference.

Our evenings were filled with great opportunities to mingle and share. I highly recommend this event and suggest you add a few days to your visit to enjoy Keswick, especially the sacred stone circle, Castlerigg, a short walk from town.

King’s Cross / St Pancras

Next on my itinerary was a day in London with Richard Abbot, a fine Numerologist who I met at SF-BATS just a few weeks before. We gathered on an unusually humid and bright day in London at King’s Cross/St Pancras. He showed me the ropes for getting around this bustling city and navigating the trains. Big thanks, Richard!

IMG_3664 Our day included a little research at the British Museum, including the Dr. John Dee magical tools on exhibit, and perusing several metaphysical book stores, including Atlantis and Watkins. Those who know me will understand how exciting this was for me and that I did not leave without a bagful of books.

Next, I flew to Paris where I had planned to meet with dear ol’friends to travel to the countryside and do some hiking. Alas, those Parisians!!! Suffice it to say, I spent all six days in Paris, yet had a wonderful time walking the streets filled with history, statues, fountains, charm, and great food.

IMG_4178The Paris Metro was easy to navigate and quite enchanting as strolling musicians entertained us. I took this photo of the Concorde station for Enrique Enriquez of Tarology. Now I have come to realize the significance of these letters as they are the written Declaration of Human Rights from the French Revolution of 1789.

On my first day in Paris I made a beeline for the Saint-Lazare district looking for La Coraline, a fabulous metaphysical bookstore with a huge collection of decks. Thank you Gina Jean for recommending this resource. There I selected unique decks for myself and a few friends on my shopping list.

IMG_3812IMG_3804IMG_3788

This was followed by two days filled of research at the Musee du Louvre. I had not been in this historic palace since 1982. It has changed significantly and was much more crowded, yet well managed and easy to navigate. Suffice it to say, by the end of the Tarot Tour I had taken 3000 photos and a few videos with my dear iPad. Many details from European history have contributed to the development of Tarot and other oracle images. In addition to the massive collection of art, the building itself, as a former palace, is decorated with the symbols of its time, as seen from the wood carvings, ironworks, adornments and painted walls.

IMG_3876 IMG_3873The Tuileries Gardens are so much more colorful now than when I first walked these grounds—as if a scene from of a Renaissance painting. I was happy to rest my feet in this park after exploring the entire Lourve and walking around the delightful Parisian boulevards. By the way….off topic….I was a bit overwhelmed with the fact that at least half the population smokes cigarettes. Everywhere I would walk there were people smoking.

By now I had been posting photos on Facebook and connecting with Tarot friends everywhere I went. Two very special Tarot friends contacted me from the Parisian area. First was Bertrand Saint-Guillain, from whom I learned more about the energy and flow of the Marseille Tarot deck, and purchased his sweet mini-Lenormand as we enjoyed our hot beverages in the St. Michel area. Bertrand was so kind to gift me with his unique mini-Marseille deck. Merci beaucoup!

Laurent Langlais

…and Laurent Langlais, who I had connected with years earlier via our mutual interest in Taoism, I Ching, and Tarot, graced me with his time. Laurent is also known for his Feng Shui skills. We exchanged powerful readings over a delightful Parisian meal. He displayed his special Oswald Wirth Tarot deck. I truly enjoyed these meetings as we shared our passion for our art.

Finally made it out to the French countryside as I rode the train from Paris to Torino, Italy (Turin). Sunshine, vineyards, and the French Alps passed by my window as I moved through a part of Europe I have never seen before. It amazes me how my little iPad can capture scenes from a moving train.

IMG_4966Torino, as with many of Italy’s cities, has at it’s heart the remnants of its Medieval and Renaissance past with beautifully maintained buildings, squares and narrow streets. Many Tarot people know that northern Italy is the birthplace of the first Tarot decks as this area is rich with history, culture, and symbols that influenced these early creations.

IMG_4475The modern city of Torino is filled with universities and an international population of students. I familiarized myself with the public transportation system, which I always enjoy, being side-by-side with everyday people. The Torino Information office sells a wonderful 2-day pass that includes most of their museums, sites, and public transportation. This certainly kept me busy as I continued my research and photographs, especially in the Museo delle Antichità Egizie (Museum of Ancient Egypt) where I was able to video the many 5-6 meter papyrus scrolls of the Book of the Dead displayed in glass cases. I apologize for the poor lighting, but I noticed throughout my European trip that light and reflection were obstacles to getting decent photographs in the museums.

IMG_4994Torino is also known for its chocolate. I rarely indulge, but allowed myself a taste of history by drinking this classic hot chocolate from Baratti & Milano (since 1858). It was like hot pudding that has not been placed in the refrigerator to set. If I had placed my spoon in the cup, it would stand upright for a long time.

My last day was reserved for finding a metaphysical bookstore or two and visiting the office of Lo Scarabeo. I had stumbled upon a sweet little store near where I stayed and spent the lunch hours in typical Italian fashion, enjoying a hot beverage and lovely company at Shakty….got a great Italian Tarot deck too.

IMG_5105The afternoon was filled with a special visit with Lo Scarabeo (LS). What a friendly and creative group of people!

IMG_5107 IMG_5126 Roberto gave me the complete tour as I discovered he is a creative catalyst for many of the decks produced through LS. Here is a photo of him with a golden sheet from the first Russian version of the Visconti Tarot deck. He shared several of his secrets that are captured in decks and specific cards he has designed.

On to Switzerland and my visit with friend and neighbor, Gabrielle. She is Swiss and grew up in Luzern (Lucerne). I have always loved the view of Lake Lugano, the most picturesque train ride in all of Europe. I have wanted to stop and spend a little time there and my wish finally came true. She met me there and we drove to Beredino, a typical Swiss-Italian village in the Alps, where we stayed in her family retreat.

IMG_5159IMG_5177

My favorite thing about Switzerland is the well established footpaths that crisscross the country. We roamed local paths while picking freshly dropped chestnuts for roasting and visited a local art community/village.

IMG_5253IMG_5194IMG_5257

Our drive north to Luzern in the heart of Switzerland crossed over Sankt (Saint) Gotthard pass and along river valleys flanked with majestic mountains, villages, cows, ski areas, and train tracks.

IMG_5311

Luzern is another European city rich with Medieval and Renaissance roots. It retains it’s original market squares, some still in use today, and old buildings, many with their original murals. We came across a window display from this ancient apothecary, clearly the lab of an alchemist.

IMG_5354IMG_5434IMG_5439

Besides being a lakeside establishment, the signature feature of Luzern is the two wooden bridges that cross the river that divides the city. What I discovered is the second, less traveled Spreuer Bridge houses a series of Totentanz,”Dance of Death” paintings, dating from 1626 to 1635. For you Tarot history buffs, this concept was a powerful influence in the development of the first Italian Tarot decks, according to Robert O’Neill in his preeminent book, Tarot Symbolism.

IMG_5462IMG_5398 Also, picked up a couple of German Lenormand and Kipper decks. It is wonderful how each town has it’s metaphysical bookstore. Thank you, Gabrielle, for sharing your home and its history.

IMG_5686My last European stop was back in London to finish my research at the British Museum (BM) and to attend the UK Tarot Conference. Woke up early and planned to get several hours of work done with the BM archives. The helpful library staff brought the three books and two decks I requested. Just sitting in this room full of beautiful wood cabinets, desks, and tables was amazing. While waiting for my items I observed other researchers handling materials wearing clean gloves, while an artist was viewing an original art print as she created a detailed sketch (only pencils are allowed).

IMG_5692I had the thrill of holding a large red leather bound album, Great Symbols of the Path; illustrations to the Ritual of the most Holy Order of the Rosy and Golden Cross. 1917-21, bequeathed (in 1973) by Arthur E. Waite. What a pleasure to view the original pen sketches and watercolor sheets drawn by Frater Donec Attingam and Wilfred Pippet. I was impressed by the size of the drawings accompanied by unique details on how each is placed on the “Tree of Life.” To view these pictures, follow this link to the BM archive site. Please respect their instructions about what, when and how the images may be copied or used. To have your own copy of these wonderful images, paperback copies of Abiding in the Sanctuary — The Waite-Trinck Tarot by Tali Goodwin and Marcus Katz will soon be available at this link. The hardback was a limited edition and is sold out. I also wish to send love and appreciation to Tali, researcher extraodinaire. Tali’s original research revealed the Waite-Trinick work in the BM and later highlighted the ‘Game of Hope’ as “The Original Lenormand” as posted on The Tarot Speakeasy , her weblog site.

IMG_5753This special item in the BM archives is a copy of an original Das Spiel der Hofnung, “Game of Hope” box, cards, and instructions. Many of you may know that these were the inspiration for the Petit Lenormand oracle. The card fronts and instructions are available for viewing on their website, but here is the box that contains them and the back of the cards. Note each card has its number, 1 through 36, stamped on the back of the card. Here is a link to their BM page. Marcus and Tali published, with permission, a copy of these original card fronts. You can read a thorough review of this deck on Donnaleigh’s blog. My exploration of the BM archives also put an original Albano-Waite box and deck in my hands, my favorite Waite version. Then, I began to explored two unique Tarot history books from their collections.

Around this time I became aware that I was feeling ill and wondered if I should leave. I actually used the Game of Hope cards to do a reading for myself and got a very clear message to go immediately and swiftly.

Fortunately, I was able to squeeze into Kim Arnold’s special Thursday “Wheel of Fortune” tour as the 22nd member, which started with the group meeting at THE Freemasons’ Hall for a tour. Unfortunately, my illness was becoming more painful and I’m sure I looked like “XIII Death” warmed over as I dragged along. I was able to take a few photos of the Grand Temple ceiling. The funny thing is the tour guide kept saying that the astrological art and symbols had “no significance.” Right…wink, wink.

IMG_5768IMG_5775 UKTarotConf2013-1

Kim kindly whisked me and a few others away in a cab to our next activity, “The London Eye,” for a glorious view of this classic city in a private gondola. Due to my poor disposition, I chose not to take the risk of being stuck in this ferris wheel in case I grew more ill. I especially did not wish to spoil everyone else’s experience. By now I was certain I was suffering from food poisoning. Here is what I missed…

I also missed the party at Atlantis Books for I left the group to return to my room where I slept through the afternoon to the next morning in order to feel refreshed for the first day, my only day, at the UK Tarot Conference. I was back to my healthy self and enjoyed a wonderful day with many fantastic Tarot friends and great presentations, including Carrie Paris, Chloe McCracken, Lyn Olds, and Kim Arnold.

Me-KimArnold-London IMG_5782 Just today I was reminiscing about the sweet little Clannad song that John Matthews and I sang together from the British TV series, Robin of Sherwood…”Robin, the Hooded Man.” Caitlin Matthews was a delight as well and had kindly reserved a copy of her new Enchanted Lenormand Oracle for me, a big reason for my attendance at the conference. Spending time with new and established friends was bitter sweet since I was to leave the next day and not enjoy the completion of the event. Special shout out to Kim, Robert, Lisa, Cathi, Judith, and especially, Tero.

IMG_5811My flight back to the states included a stop in Iceland, then flying over Greenland. What a rare opportunity for me. Most of my trip through Europe was covered with clouds, as was the flight back to the states. I was barely able to capture this view of the icy surface of Greenland. Here is an odd fact about me….I don’t get jet lag and land on my feet when traveling.

IMG_5837Arrived in Dallas, Texas, Saturday night and was so happy to see my friend, Mati, who graciously picked me up and had me as her guest a few days. She had organized the Tarot workshops for the next day at Barley’s art studio. We had a great gathering of students, some known, others new faces, on Sunday for my presentation, “Sacred Journey of the Soul – through the major arcana of the Tarot” (also on DVD) and a new twist on Tarot Alive™ where we created Soul Card collages.

IMG_5991 Gina Thies and I had a few fun days together as we worked on our Oracle Soup podcast and made preparations for TarotCon-USA in Dallas. We were each presenting and supported each other as we added final touches to our work. We joined the early arrivals on a special trip to the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. YeeHaw! Thank you Margaret Letzkus for organizing this interesting sojourn into my past. Corrine Kenner and Doug Reuschel created a unique majors-only “Stockyards Tarot” album, posted on Facebook from photos they took on our field trip.

TarotCon_Dallas-SexSymbol-Me-PaulNagy.2013Lots of great presentations including Mary Greer, Sheilaa Hite, James Wells, as well as the sleuthing skills of Tali Goodwin and Marcus Katz as they revealed the probable location that inspired “Pixie” (Pamela Coleman Smith) in much of her artwork for the Waite Tarot deck minor arcana. Of course, they are working on a book. We can hardly wait! We rounded out the day with my evening presentation on “Sexual Symbolism and Meaning in Tarot,” which was well received by all. Thank you brother Paul for the photo! And thank you sista’ Gina for the makeup!

Last day of the Conference started with Lenormand oracle diva Rana George, then Gina Theis on “The Shadow”, ending with Andrew McGregor and Paul Nagy. James wrote a two-part review of this conference on his weblog, Circle Ways. Here is a group photo of most of our TarotCon-Dallas crew. What a wonderful time we all had together.

IMG_5890 IMG_5943 IMG_5930 The “survivors” dinner was a blast as we celebrated together at a Cajun restaurant. Fried okra and fried pickles were very popular, as was fried gator and a few Hurricanes. In preparation, I was “Rana-fied” as needed color was added to my face. Thanks darlin’.

As a special gift to us, Carrie Paris created this unique spread with photos from our fabulous gathering. I took three of the photos. Can you guess how many photos I am in? Can you name other Tarot folks in these images?

CarrieParis-TarotCon_Dallas.2013

It seemed like the perfect ending for my Tarot Tour as I sat with Corrine Kenner waiting for the shuttle to the airport. We were together in the beginning of this adventure and now had come full circle. What a blessed experience this was, filled with bright spirits, inspiring exchanges, and lasting memories, not to mention a few new books and decks!

Oh, and I returned to Portland for a few more days of reading and taught a Lenormand class. A fitting omega to the alpha of my adventure as I ended with yet another Soul Card reading that matched the tattoo upon my client. Guess which card?

IMG_6023

Hope you enjoyed a little sample of my 2013 Tarot Tour adventure.

I may create a YouTube video so be sure to check back here for the link.

I wish to thank all my Tarot friends and clients who allowed me to post their images on this blogpost.

2013 has been a wild year for me, beginning with real lows, then shooting up with lots of energy and activity. One of the things that helped me stay centered during the difficult periods (and manage the exciting times) was keeping my focus on my overall purpose, what makes my life more wonderful. It was also important for me to walk in integrity every step of the way, even if my definition of integrity may not meet the standards of others.

Each year around the solstice I review my path and update my goals with current dreams and inspirations for the coming year. I often teach Finding Your Soul Purpose and Path in Life around this time to support others to find their compass in life. As with anything I teach, I am constantly researching and learning new concepts and tools to share.

Occasionally, I watch Marie Forleo’s video blog, MarieTV. She has valuable tips for entrepreneurs, especially young women setting out into the world with fresh ideas. “Setting Goals” was the topic today with guest, Danielle LaPorte. Of course I wanted to hear what they had to say in light of my research for ever better ways to inspire and ground one’s purpose in life. Danielle shared material from her book  The Desire Map on identifying one’s “Core desire feeling” by repeating her mantra, “How do you want to feel today?”

So what if you first got clear on how you actually wanted to feel in your life, and then created some “Goals with Soul”?

The journey has to feel the way you want the destination to feel.

I was so excited to see an author promoting the wisdom I value and teach, reaching a younger generation in an effective way. It is a classic technique in psychotherapeutic practice to invite my client to identify the real goal of their longings. Many people postpone gratification or feel a need to manipulate themselves, or the world around them, to meet their needs.

For example, a client might say that they are suffering because they do not have a certain object, such as a new car, or a lover (X). They report feeling like a failure, or their esteem is challenged for they believe that an essential ingredient is missing in their life.

The “what if” technique asks first, “How would you feel differently if you had….X?” I will be skipping a few steps to shorten this process, but eventually the client is invited to embody the actual feeling they believe they will have with the object, but experience it now, in the present. This is related to the message of Eckhart Tolle in his Power of Now work. Why wait until the (intangible) future to feel happy, content, alive, excited, etc.? Why not invite that into your life this very moment as a gift to yourself…from the inside?

Danielle reminds us to direct our lives from the inside, out, rather than let the outside dictate our direction. In the Tarot, I relate this to the Chariot setting out and encountering the Strength archetype, as they invite each of us to align with our unique path by having the authentic vision and inner passion to see it through.

Yes, life is better and more fulfilling when we are clear on our soulful goals, allowing that resonance to set our rudder through the flow of life. I discuss the specifics of Soul Purpose and Goal-setting in my next weblog.

To flow with the happiness and ease of your heart and mind is optimum. As the Kabbalah teaches, desire is our response to Yahweh/God’s perpetual abundance and our wish to be more God-like in return. This refers to a more spiritual and guidance-based relationship with desire, the feeling one has when they know they are in the right place at the right time, in the flow of the Tao. This is not the base level or lower chakra relationship to desire—an emptiness that wishes to be filled—the root of addiction.

Desire is most often expressed as a want, wish or craving. I believe it is important to examine desire from another point of view, our personal needs.

Marshall Rosenberg in his premiere book, Nonviolent Communication, promotes a very easy to understand, yet challenging to live, set of guidelines to a more loving and compassionate way of relating to self and others. His work is highly influenced by compassionate activist role models, such as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., who taught and modeled the tenets of compassion for all, especially those who expressed no compassion for them. Feel free to view my YouTube class on An Introduction to Compassionate Communication.

Behind every emotion is a met or unmet need.

In other words, we humans are need driven, not emotion driven. Our range of needs encompasses—security and sustenance, intimacy and physical touch, understanding and connecting, solitude and autonomy, as well as other values. Rosenberg’s work revels this simple pattern. When we are happy, our needs are being met. When we are unhappy, sad, angry, our needs are not being met. Most of us lack the emotional vocabulary and strength of vulnerability to express our feelings in a effective way, by identifying our actual needs. Brene’ Brown has contributed a great deal to the research and promotion of vulnerability as a personal strength and disarming presence.

The average human tends to live by automatic emotional responses to triggers in their environment. It takes patience and practice to slow down, then center our focus so we can identify what our deeper motivations may be in a given situation.

Follow the emotion and it will help you identify your core needs. Once you understand your needs, you can more clearly direct successful ways to fulfill your needs, your core desires.

Part II of this discussion looks at strategies for aligning with your soul purpose and living your dreams. Just in time for the new year!

Part II – Fulfilling Your Soul Purpose

Happy Solstice everyone! Each year around this time, I create a new “Goal Map” for my coming year, sometimes combined with a Tarot card exploration. On our Oracle Soup podcast (December 27, 2013), Gina Ties and I cover a variety of creative ways to prepare for your new year with the cards. Here, I would like to share with you some special ideas and techniques I utilize to manifest my life’s potential.

Much of the information shared in this post is drawn from a powerful workshop I teach Finding Your Soul Purpose and Path in Life, an experience that helps students identify their strengths and unique skills. These qualities are then condensed into a focus and purpose in their life. Finally, we develop goals and the steps to work toward and ground their vision.

We all have a purpose in life. Those who deny this fact may not be aware of their purpose, but once their life is examined and the breadcrumbs of influence and life choices are revealed, the pattern becomes more apparent. In my 25+ years as a psychotherapist and Transformative Tarot Consultant™ searching for one’s purpose is the most common theme I have observed with my clients and, thus, the inspiration for developing this process to help support us all in making better choices that align with our greatest potential.

Powerful tools for successfully realizing your potential:

  1. Know your Soul Purpose, your Mission Statement
  2. Create a Mind Map (or a Vision Board) as a visual mandala of goals and affirmations for the coming years.
  3. Develop a Vision Statement
  4. Work out doable steps to accomplishing goals on a time-line.

Although each of these four tools merits a page, and could be developed into a book, I would like to introduce you to them as concepts and make suggestions for further study.

Mission Statement

In a previous blogpost, Soul Purpose “The Call to Adventure”, I reflect upon the search for Truth we each are called to discover in our lives. This search includes finding your compass needle and aligning with it’s direction. An important element is discovered by understanding your needs, as defined in my last weblog, What is Desire?.

Knowing your orientation gives you a focus and direction in which to move forward with intention. This direction and intention is what makes up your “Mission Statement” as described by Laurie Beth Jones in her instructive workbook, The Path.

Mind Map / Vision Board

Next, allow your imagination and intuition to flow freely as you explore various dreams and visions that align with your purpose. For example, part of my mission is to be an inspiration for transformation and change. From this awareness the character of my Tarot work became better defined, placing more emphasis on my transformational skills and gifts for the world…including this article.

Tarot folks have a great tool for visioning….Tarot cards. You can pull out one or two decks with visuals that inspire you. Go through the deck and select cards (face up) that match aspects of your dreaming. If you do not have a Tarot deck, this can be done with magazine clippings or internet images, such as on Pinterest. In essence, you are creating a collage incorporating the various parts of your visioning process.

BaguaMap

One of my favorite tools for organizing the free flow of possibilities is to create a mind map. (BTW there are lots of great Mind Map apps) With your Mission Statement in the center, notice how many branches, or arms, there are to your world. As a Taoist, I utilize the Bagua Map to represent the eight areas of my life, changing some of the labels to match my life priorities. From each of these branches, there are finer details attached as limbs. My “Career” branch has limbs for: Soulful Counseling, Sacred Journey of Your Soul book series, Transformative Tarot Consulting™, Transformative Tarot Teaching. Then each of these limbs carry smaller offshoots such as with teaching: Professional Tarot Consulting Course webinars, Reader’s Studio 14 class, New Renaissance Bookshop classes, etc.

Vision Statement

By the time you have filled the page with your map or vision collage, half the work is done. This is your outline for developing a Vision Statement. In this statement, you affirm your activities as an unfolding story of your life and accomplishments. Remember, affirmations are written as if they are happening in the moment, are alive, a reality in your life.

Again, using myself as an example, in my Vision Statement I include language that expresses the current and ongoing activities mentioned above, with embellishments. Example: “My Professional Tarot Consulting Course webinar series is a huge success with students attending from around the world. The timely publication of my latest book, “Sacred Journey of Your Soul—through the Major Arcana, Vol. I” illustrated concepts presented throughout the course, inspiring Tarot readers to learn more powerful and ethical ways to support change and transformation for their clients, and the world.”

Goal Setting

It is my professional observation that goals are rarely met without developing a plan of execution. Not everyone has the concentration or diligence to jump into the deep end and swim a gold metal race. It requires preparation and baby steps in most cases.

From your vision statement you know you have specific goals you wish to achieve. Now you back track and research the actual steps required to accomplish that task. Each step should build up to and support the next. Then, put those steps on your calendar, integrate them into your schedule.

Remember… it is the journey, not the destination, where you live each moment. So, only pursue activities that are life-affirming and satisfying. Even the most challenging tasks can turn to joy when you realize they are part of your soul’s purpose.

Look at me…although I do not identify as being a writer, I focus on the joy I feel being able to share my passion and wisdom with you. Even more challenging, as a Forest Mystic who prefers to hide in the woods, my mission to transform the world pushes me beyond my comfort zone to interface and connect with you and the world at large. If I can do it, I know you can as well.

When Spirit calls, I respond…HolyCardTarot.02

It began with a handful of my friends and neighbors asking me to teach them Tarot. A few years passed with more invitations to teach. After awhile, my basic Tarot students requested more advanced lessons. In my typical Taurian style, I took this request to heart and looked for ways to manifest and ground this directive. I had 30 years of Tarot knowledge under my belt at that time and knew this was no small task.

After some soul searching, meditating on what I find to be the key ingredients to learning a more transformative and dynamic style of reading Tarot and other metaphysical tools, I created the Transformative Tarot Counseling™ Certification Program in 1998. Many students from the Oregon/Washington area participate in the various classes with a significant number of graduates on various levels of the program.

Eventually, requests began appearing from all over the world, especially after I published my second book, An Introduction to Transformative Tarot Counseling – the High Art of Reading, inquiring about whether I travel to teach or offer teleclasses. I resisted the internet class option for there was a very important ingredient that would be missing for me, something I know to be essential to truly learning a new art…the personal presence and guidance of the mentor, along with the dynamic interaction between students. Technology had not yet satisfied my multimedia vision of a classroom and the live, interactive component so important to learning.

Last year I discovered Global Spiritual Studies (GSS) and the many wonderful webinars/DVDs/online access choices they provide students on a multitude of topics. Linda Marson produces a professional product with exciting options, such as live webinars with an active chat room. The presenter is visually present, clearly heard, plus there is a PowerPoint presentation running throughout the class. In addition to the live webinar, the presentation is recorded and available there after as a DVD or online access. Of course, there are handouts included with each class.

In 2013 I tested the waters and produced two webinars with GSS. GSS link here. This was a great success and opened my mind to other possibilities that lead me to fulfilling the requests I have received world-wide. In addition to the great webinar format, I have added a Facebook Support Group for students interested in interacting, discussing course topics, practicing exercises together, and working toward certification. Please read on for more details about this exciting new way of learning on a global level.

Why am I passionate about Tarot?

Kat-TradeCard

My passion for Tarot is something I have wanted to write about for some time. It is one thing to talk about and teach the subject of Tarot, but what is the attraction? What keeps the fire growing for 40+ years?

After teaching an Introduction to Alchemy & Kabbalah in Tarot webinar this week, my fiery passion takes on more meaning—as if I am the dreamy alchemist in my laboratory meditating on the elixir of life and eternity.

The alchemy of working with Tarot and my client’s transformation is my calling. It is as if I go into a shamanic trance and enter the dream realm with my students or clients as their guide through the dark, coaxing their courageous adventure into the unknown, through the abyss, to be reborn on the other side with enhanced awareness. I have also applied the metaphor of being a spiritual midwife, birthing new awareness with each client or student who wishes to face their challenges, die to their fears, to be renewed with excitement and confidence about their life.

Tarot, then, is not only the tool for such transformations, but the visual metaphor of the pathwork on such a journey. It is the perfect ally for my alchemical processes.

I have this fantasy to create a Tarot Temple titled, “Temple of Transformation” with a warning posted outside the entrance, “Beware….for whoever enters this temple will not be the same.”  Bwahaha……

In summary, my passion for Tarot is more focused on the experience of this oracle than on the information provided. It was Marshall McLuhan who coined the phrase, “The medium is the message,” which when twisting the words, adds a whole new dimension to its meaning

This is a great question to ask oneself in general—what is your passion? To have passion for life, or any part of it, truly supports a more meaningful experience. You and I may have passion for the same topic or activity, but the motivation behind it can be quite different. I encourage you to explore this topic and find, or refine, your understanding of your purpose and passion in life.

Cue Alicia Keys music….”This girl is on fire….”

Becoming a professional tarot consultant with Katrina Wynne
Posted on August 3, 2014 by linda

When can you confidently call yourself a professional tarot consultant? How do you know if the readings you offer measure up to what potential clients would describe as a professional service? Tarot is an area where many people start by doing readings as a sideline to a ‘mainstream’ job. Gradually they find they want to turn their casual tarot consultancy service into a full-time occupation.

Katrina Wynne’s  Certificate course in professional tarot consultancy has been designed to meet the needs of the growing number of people in this situation. Techniques for fine-tuning tarot reading skills are covered in the classes, but so too are the skills needed to develop a professional tarot business. These include basic counselling skills, ethics and business skills, particularly in the area of marketing and promotion.

When you sign up for the course you receive recordings of the eight classes and access to a private online discussion group where you connect with Katrina and a community of enthusiastic learners for a period of eight weeks. You have access to additional resource materials and the opportunity to discuss topics, practise exercises and receive personal supervision from Katrina. The classes have also been packaged as four sets of master classes which can be purchased separately from the full Certificate program.

The next online discussion group runs from 15 September – 15 NovemberSign up now so you can start watching the recordings in preparation for the 8-week intensive.

Here I talk with Katrina about the background to the course and her approach to guiding and mentoring  tarot readers on their professional journey.

LM: What are the benefits of a certificate course for tarot readers or consultants?

KW: A certificate program sets specific goals and establishes a curriculum for achieving those goals. It’s an agreement between facilitator and student that sets the parameters for activities and shared learning. Receiving a final certificate honors and celebrates students who have made a commitment to their own excellence in a topic of personal interest, often associated with their chosen profession or occupation. Working toward a certificate can also be a motivating force for people who might otherwise lose their focus.

LM: What’s your answer to skeptics who say that reading tarot cards is too nebulous an activity to have formal training, let alone a certificate course which implies that tarot reading is a ‘real’ job?

TR_14-Group.2.edit

Katrina surrounded by happy students!

KW: Reading cards, much like counseling, holds the heart and soul of another in one’s hands. Counseling skills and ethics are essential knowledge, values, and skills to be utilized in a professional manner, within the scope of one’s practice. Scope of practice is determined by one’s training and certification, as well as local ordinances and laws that affect one’s profession. It is my belief that we can all raise the bar as readers to meet more professional standards while educating the public on the diversity of styles of readings and the valuable service we provide.

LM: What led you into designing a certificate course?

KW: After hundreds of requests from around the world to bring my Transformative Tarot Counseling™ Certification Program to their area or to offer classes online, I spent years searching for an internet format that would support the kind of two-way interactive learning style that I prefer. It is important to me as a teacher to get to know each student and to customize some of their learning to support their unique interests. Call me old school, but I like that personal touch.

When I discovered Global Spiritual Studies I knew I had found the best home for my presentations and coursework. Students enjoy the video presence of the presenter who guides them through a PowerPoint presentation. As a Tarot “visual”, I find this is better than writing a book. It brings the lessons to life in ways words can not. I take full advantage of this wonderful visual medium in each class, chocked full of illustrations, helpful guides, and handouts.

LM: How did you find the process of converting your face-to-face program into an online format?

KW: It was a daunting task to condense each six-hour workshop into a 1-hour multimedia presentation. Plus, I reorganized some of my course materials and expanded upon topics, such as what it is to be intuitive or psychic. Professional business and promotion is another subject that underwent considerable expansion. After 20 years as a public reader and teacher, I had a wealth of experience to share in that area.

For each recording I created new illustrations, reached out to wonderful artists and bloggers to share their visual graphics, re-worked the exercises to support solitary as well as group activities, updated my references and resources, developed new handouts, and talked a bit faster than I would normally. HaHa!
In addition, I expanded much of the presentation to incorporate other styles of reading, such as Petit Lenormand, I Ching, and other oracles.

LM: What can students expect during the eight-week periods when you’re actively participating in a private online discussion group with them?

KW: First, I strongly recommend that Professional Tarot Consulting Certificate Course students purchase and view the recordings as soon as possible, possibly watching them twice. I also urge each student to watch my “Beginning Tarot – Knowledge” mini-series first to prepare them for my unique, psycho-spiritual approach to Tarot and all things metaphysical.

After the first viewing of each class, read the required reading. This will help pull the lesson together. The “secret” online study group is by invitation only for currently registered students. We work together on all sorts of activities – from discussing topics, reading assignments to exercises in dyads. I provide personal supervision, inspirational resources and links, not to mention a list of over 1000 titles in my personal library!

To receive a certificate students complete a written assignment and a final exam. This is not as scary as it sounds – the questions are relatively easy and drawn from class materials and readings.

Once students have completed this fast paced experiential group and been awarded their certificate, they are invited to join the ongoing support group with a wonderful community of past graduates.

LM: Some classes cover topics that appear to go beyond the skills and knowledge required by tarot readers. For example, Kabbalah, astrology and alchemy. Why do you include these topics in your program?

02KW: Many tarot and other decks incorporate these metaphysical traditions. Look, for instance at card number 2 in the Major Arcana, the High Priestess. In the Waite/Smith and many other Tarot decks this card has a multitude of symbols that enhance the diversity and depth of its message. For example, from a numerological perspective the number two represents balance between worlds, conscious and unconscious, also pure Yin energy.

From a Kabbalistic perspective you have the two columns “J” and “B” (Jachin and Boaz) from the Temple of Solomon, the outer, dualistic pillars of the Tree of Life. You can also look at this card with an astrologer’s eye – the Moon suggests feminine cycles and wisdom, which in Greek mythology equals Artemis. From a symbolic perspective you have pomegranates (= fertility), a veil (= gateway between worlds) and a blue flowing gown (= water and unconscious realm).

The alchemical lesson illustrates the process of change, which is the goal of many readings—how can I change my life in a more life-enhancing way?

LM: What do you see as the final outcome for your students?

KW: By the time each student has completed this certificate course, they have an increased respect for the diversity of Tarot and other oracles. But more importantly, they begin to move in a direction that calls to them, incorporating what is useful and leaving what does not fit their current needs. All this is accomplished in a supportive learning environment where students get to experiment and try on new skills as they develop their own style.

Here is what students are saying about this course…

The Professional Tarot Consulting program was the perfect way for me to dig deeper into Tarot – to learn and experience so much more than just a basic overview of the craft. Katrina is beyond knowledgeable in all things Tarot – you can tell she is just scratching the surface of all she wants to share – and yet each class was overloaded with history and connections and new awareness. My reading skills improved, but more importantly, I have a much richer understanding and respect for Tarot in all its forms.     — Cherie, Alabama

This has been a transformative experience. I’ve rethought much of my reading style, and for the first time I feel like going pro is doable rather than a distant dream.     — Sherryl, California

I stumbled into this course thinking it would assist in developing my counselling skills, ie how do you frame questions, what would you do if this situation arose ? etc etc.(nuts and bolts issues) What I got was so much more. It was an experience in areas with a new light shining on them. It was an illuminating, stimulating and enriching course. Fun too working with people from around the world. Highly recommend it to all looking to explore subtleties in time honoured knowledge.                          — Lyn, Australia

I have started watching the (PTC) classes and would like to tell you that I love your voice and pronunciation greatly: very clear and soothing at the same time. In general, lots to learn and to think for me.                                     — Violeta, Lithuania

Arithmology, Arithmancy, and Numerology in Tarot

numerology-online

In my 20s I learned the basics of “Tarot Numerology” from Angeles Arrien and have been using it ever since. Somehow, for these 30 years, I assumed that all Tarot readers were applying Tarot Numerology basically the way I was…HaHa. I now realize that not only are there different ways of adding the numbers of one’s birth date, but there is a wonderful array of styles of arranging and interpreting the Birth Cards and Year Cards. I also have come to understand how unique my own way of working with Birth and Year Cards has developed and am currently working on a book to share my powerful insights drawn from many years of experience.

Here are some of the terms and styles of reading I have discovered…

Arithmology – the esoteric significance of numbers based on the spiritual and mystical number symbolism developed by Pythagoras (Greek philosopher & mathematician; c. 570 – c. 495 BC). Each of the nine single-digit numbers are associated with a divine principle. Here is a great article on Pythagorean Numerology: http://www.sacred-texts.com/eso/sta/sta16.htm

Arithmancy – in the Harry Potter novels, Hogwarts School taught a magical system using the secret properties of numbers, including future predictions with numbers.

Numerology – although numerology is associated predominately with letters and names, there is an aspect that is focused on the birth date to determine one’s “life lesson.”

Tarot Numerology – a system of associating one’s birth date number with a corresponding Tarot major card. This extends the essential single-digit numerology system with double-digit cards from the 22 major arcana cards. This technique was popularized in the 1980s by Angeles Arrien  in her classes and book, The Tarot Workbook. One’s Birth Card/s (based on birth date) and Year Card/s carry the significance of their Tarot card’s meaning.

Tarot Constellations and Hidden Factor Cards - Mary Greer’s classic contributions to the work of Arrien, illustrating the constellated major arcana cards, including hidden relationships. Greer updated this work in her recent book, Who are you in the Tarot?

Pathworking with Tarot Numerology – I teach the relationship to our Birth Card arithmology as essential archetypes and the journey of Year Cards as pathworking, unveiling the mandala of life they create together. It is a complete reading for discovering one’s life purpose and path. This is different from Qabalistic “Tree of Life” Pathworking, but has some overlapping applications. It includes elements of Arrien and Greer’s contributions. I am currently working on a book and webinar.

Tarot Birth Cards & the Original Hebrew Tree of Knowledge – David Schaar’s style, which brings his extensive knowledge of Eastern Kabbalah, placing Tarot Birth Cards on the Hebrew Tree of Knowledge, provides a structured reading that reflects on major attributes and challenges in the querent’s life.

The Business of Being an Oracle

NWTS-Katrina-ProgramAd.final

There is a rule of thumb in media production…for every second you see and hear on the screen, there is at least an hour of writing, recording, filming, mixing and editing. So it is with developing your oracle business. You invest your heart and time into learning your craft, but then how do you let the world know who you are and what you have to offer?

Creating a name, a reputation, and a brand is a constant occupation, the business of being an oracle these days. “Word of mouth” was the way to find a reader when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s, but boy have things changed!

I feel fortunate that I took typing in high school (currently 50 wpm), started computing with the Apple II Plus when first released in 1979, studied photography, and continue to learn desktop publishing skills as the software evolves. This one-woman office creates all my websites, promotional materials, PowerPoint presentations for teaching, self-published books, and just created the full-page ad above for a Tarot conference program guide. Today I was on Skype and email planning my 2015 Tarot Tour where I will be visiting Tarot Meetups in at least three different cities, along with conference speaking appearances, workshops, private appointments for readings, and more.

The point I am making is that many of us work more hours a day creating perpetual promotions for our service than the actual time we spend engaged in our art. I have daily office hours where I send and receive emails, confer on Skype and phone, and create new projects. Modern oracles invest their time on social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, sharing their insights, experience, and personal antidotes.

Is all this necessary? Not for everyone, but I would venture it is paramount for those who are creating a new business or sustaining a successful practice. In this video link, business coach, Marie Forleo, shares her wisdom on this subject, “A.B.M. – Always be marketing.”

When I created my Professional Tarot Consulting Certificate Course, it became very clear to me that in order to prepare my students for the real world of being a professional oracle, I needed to not only cover the topic of consulting oracles, but also coach them on promotional skills and opportunities. This webinar recording stands alone as a 2-class bundle called “Developing Your Practice”, which also includes counseling skills and ethics, or viewed as part 4 of the 8-class PTC Certificate Course, all on Global Spiritual Studies.

Growing old is not for sissies and being an independent entrepreneur is for the diligent. OK…just finished writing my “80th” weblog post on My Sacred Journey. Ahhh….

The Traveling Blue Nails…

My 2015 Tarot Tour was a wonderful adventure filled with exciting Tarot events, teachers, students, clients, friends, and birds.

…it all started with my arrival in Portland, when I decided to gift myself, early, with my annual mani pedi spa treatment. I had chosen purple polish for my once a year splurge, but then a small voice in my head said, try blue…

BlueNails-Voyager

I loved this color and noticed immediately upon preparing my Voyager Tarot cards for reading that they were a perfect match! Now I was ready to read and teach at New Renaissance Bookshop with extra pizazz.

Me-NRB-BlueNails

The next week rolled out the first Northwest Tarot Symposium (NWTS), a fabulous gathering of Tarot and oracle enthusiasts. The first and only Tarot conference in Portland was the American Tarot Association (ATA) event, where I was teaching on September 9, 2001…a date I can not forget and wrote about in a previous blog here. Their second ATA event in 2003 cancelled at the last minute, but a group of us presenters had an intimate gathering and gave each other samples of our presentations.

Bonnie Cehovet did a comprehensive 3-part series where she reports on the many wonderful goings on at this NWTS. I would like to share a few photos with you below.

Personally, I enjoyed my time hanging with dear Tarot friends, especially Oracle Soup podcast sister, Gina Thies, and our fascinating buddy, Mark Ryan (Wildwood Tarot & app). There just isn’t enough time to cover all the things we stay up until the wee hours of the night to converse about.

Me-MarkRyan

My blue nails were a big hit with James Wanless, who was not only a good sport, but very enthusiastic about my painting his nails the same color and blending our spirits together with his Voyager Tarot deck.

BlueNails-JamesW

Of course, I love blending and was very excited to share my newest presentation on the “Sexual Symbolism & Meaning in Tarot“, which is now being offered as a webinar. Please follow this link to register for this in-depth, 2-part course which includes multiple deck images, from flirty to X-rated (pg-13).

If you were not able to attend NWTS this year, never fear, we have a date for 2016…..March 4-6. Just follow this link to pre-register and receive a great discount.

Next stop….Denver, Colorado, where the largest Tarot Meetup group in the USA is hosted by the lovely Joy Vernon and her wonderful Tarot Tribe. There were so many Tarot and oracle activities going on that week, I was jumping from class to expo, back to my classes (Dreamwork & Tarot, 4 Stages of Highly Meaningful Reading), dinner with the Tarot gals, and then two days of private sessions at Isis Books & Gifts, a fabulous venue stocked with tons of decks.

Me-DTM-BMSE-SherryP_daughterDTM-MercuryCafe-RennaS_SherryS_LindaB_JoyVMe-DTM-Dreamwork_Tarot

What struck me during my stay in Denver is that somehow the sun was following me all the way from Yachats on the Oregon Coast. Not a cloud in the sky, although there was snow piled up on the shady side of buildings from the weather the week before. This strange, clear, warm weather followed me all the way to the end of my Tarot Tour.

Just before jetting off to the Southeast I stopped by The Apple Store for a “Genius Bar” appointment. What a surprise as I waited for my session…bigger than life, Stevie Wonder walked right up to me to touch the laptop next to where I was sitting. We had such a loving exchange, touched hands, and were humored by the fact that we are both “Taurus” sun signs. Wish I could have stayed one more night to attend his show in Denver.

StevieWonder

The down side is the “geniuses” at Apple wiped out my iPad with some very important data…ugh…. Good thing I am a Taoist. I go with the flow of life, the ups and downs, and keep my center.

Flew overnight to Orlando and slept on the bus ride across to the Tampa Bay area. I’m a southern gal and have missed the diversity of trees from the gulf coast. Heat slows one down a bit and life can be peaceful…until you need to drive somewhere. Kept wishing I had a motorcycle to zip around.

TampaArea-garden.editTampa_coast-traffic

There was so much more traffic than I remember from my last trip there in 1991. That was my last visit with my native sister before she married. It was so wonderful to hug again and meet her twin teen boys.

Me-Dina.2015

What a delight to finally meet Christiana Gaudet, the dynamic host of the Tampa Bay Area Tarot Meetup where I shared an intensive “Introduction to the Petite Lenormand.” My next class was at Gaia Spiritual Doorways, a full house, where we explored the multiple dimensions of the “Sacred Journey of the Soul – through the major arcana of the Tarot.” For those who would like a copy of this amazing lesson, here is a link to my recorded webinar of the same title.

Me-ChristianaGaudet-TBATM-2015TBATM-2015

Besides being able to just chill during the comfortable early spring weather of Florida, I continued my Tarot and oracle research. The Salvador Dali’ Museum in St. Petersburg was spectacular. I love being able to walk up to an original painting and take up close photos of parts as well as the whole image. It is fascinating to study the details and process of the artist. While there a light bulb went off for another project I would like to produce. My ideas never cease….if only I had the time to finish them all, HaHa.

Me-Dali

One of these ongoing projects is Katrina’s Personal Lenormand deck, featured this July in the Tarot Lover’s Calendar. Every image is a photo I have taken, or was taken of me, or a self-portrait. Two symbols have alluded me since I live in the Pacific NW….the fox and the stork. The closest I could come to the stork is the blue heron that visits my property along the river. Well….rumor had it that storks visited the neighborhood where I was staying. My last day there they finally appeared and the neighbor gave me food to feed them, plus they posed for several photos. Now….for the fox….might have to substitute my cat….

Woodstork-1

The traveling blue nails finally returned home to my NW forest retreat…contemplating the grass that had grown while I was gone…time to get busy in the garden…bye bye blue nails…

GSS Interview on Sexual Symbolism

Linda Marson of Global Spiritual Studies wrote a fascinating weblog post after interviewing Katrina Wynne about her work with symbolism in oracles, especially Tarot. This is a taste of what is available online in Katrina’s diverse collection of webinar topics. To sign up for the May 7th & 14th webinar series on “Sexual Symbolism & Meaning in Tarot” please follow this link.

Sexual symbolism in the Tarot with Katrina Wynne

Katrina Wynne A picture is worth a thousand words. A famous masterpiece, a child’s drawing, a photo…they all tell a story without saying a single word. They do this through colours, a sense of movement and imagery that hints at more than the object or event they are depicting. The shape of a tree, a dusty landscape, a lush green meadow, a waterfall, a smile, a gesture – every aspect of a picture talks to you in the language of symbols, one that transcends culture, race, religion and country. Tarot is a visual, symbolic language. Reading the cards is a dance between instinctual response to images on the cards and an understanding of the structure of Tarot and traditional card meanings. Your ability to engage in this dance is enhanced by an understanding of how symbolic language works. In her two Advanced Tarot Reading Skills classes, Katrina Wynne explores the Tarot as a visual symbolic language and shows you simple, yet powerful ways to work with dreams and their symbols. On 7 and 14 May Katrina is presenting two more classes which focus on Sexual Symbolism and Meaning in Tarot. ‘After  enjoying this colorful, sometimes titillating, presentation which explores the sensual side of Tarot and other oracles, you’ll never view your cards in the same way,’ says Katrina. LINDA: The use of symbolic language appears to be built into the human DNA. Why do you think this is so? KATRINA: At one level the answer to this question is very simple, but at another quite complex. In the simplest terms, symbols are a universal language that can be understood by anyone in any country or culture. For example, we can communicate the concept of motherhood by showing an image of a pregnant woman admiring her swollen belly. There will be subtle differences in the way each person responds to the pregnant woman, but in general terms the message is clear and it has been communicated without words. Anything can assume a symbolic dimension which is universally understood –  natural objects such as stones, flowers, trees, fire, water or man-made objects and structures such as houses and cars and geometric shapes (circles, squares, triangles and so on). Gestures are also symbolic, though you need to be careful because some you take for granted may not always be recognized. You might think a nod always means ‘yes’ and shaking your head from side to side means ‘no’. Be careful in Greece because it’s the other way round – a side to side movement of the head signals ‘yes’, while up and down  is ‘no’. The jolt you get from seeing a symbol, such as the head movement for ‘yes’ or ‘no’ reversed, or a smile, inverted into a frown, shows just how much we rely on symbols as a non-verbal form of communication, just how much they are built into our DNA. From The Voyager Tarot by James Wanless. The complex answer to the question relates to how humans respond to symbols, how they use them in story-telling, works of art, and divination tools such as Tarot and oracle cards. I love the DNA mandala symbol on the back of James Wanless’ Voyager Tarot cards, reminding us… “Each one of us is a part of the wholeness, and we each have our own wholeness. It’s very holographic. We are the singularity and the totality.” Dreams are full of symbols that are inviting us to unfold and integrate into our waking life. Your sub-conscious is trying to get a message through and symbolic language is its favorite tool. Why did that staircase you were climbing suddenly come to an end? How can you behave in a dream in ways you would never act in waking life? This is a fertile area for research and theories – the writings of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung in particular, have shaped modern approaches to dream interpretation, expanded upon with modern writers, such as Dr. Arnold Mindell in his powerful book, Dreaming While Awake. LINDA: What are the main levels of symbolism? KATRINA: The main levels I cover in my Advanced Tarot class are:
  • mythic symbolism
  • transpersonal, collective or archetypal
  • cultural and conventional
  • personal.

Joseph Campbell’s concept of The Hero’s Journey encapsulates what we mean by  mythic symbolism. He identified common story elements in myths and stories from a wide range of cultures. Symbolically, The Hero’s Journey is about going from the Known to the Unknown, about answering  ‘the call to adventure’, something that challenges us to move from our ordinary everyday awareness (the Known) into the Unknown – a realm where we face challenges and temptations, a place where we symbolically experience death and rebirth. We return to the Known enriched by this experience. All elements of The Hero’s Journey can be found in the story of the Major Arcana, as illustrated in my class, Sacred Journey of Your Soul – through the Major Arcana of the Tarot which is available as a recording through Global Spiritual Studies. Transpersonal symbols extend beyond the individual or personal to encompass wider aspects of humankind, life, psyche or the cosmos. Jung gave us the concept of the ‘collective unconscious’, the realm of archetypal symbols, those that appear in both individual imagination and in the mythologies of cultures. The primordial mother or father are examples of archetypal symbols. Conventional symbols include signs associated with a particular culture, e.g. a traffic ‘Stop’ light or icons such as the Smiley face. Personal symbols are those unique to an individual, an outer representation of an aspect of their inner awareness. Skin tattoos are a prime example. From the Albano-Waite Tarot. LINDA: Traditional Tarot decks such as the Waite-Smith, use a mixture of conventional and archetypal symbols. Let’s take The Lovers card, for example. What are some of the symbols and how do they help us understand the card? KATRINA: Conventional symbols found on the Waite-Smith card include objects that most people recognize, such as trees, a mountain, two human beings – one female and one male – a green snake, and Archangel Raphael. On the archetypal level, this symbolizes a relationship (noun), or relating (verb). There is an archetypal lesson on the contrast and union of opposites. The synthesis of these symbols begins to tell the story of the Garden of Eden with Eve and Adam, the Tree of Knowledge and the Tree of Life, as well as the tempting serpent. This raises the level of our understanding to this archetypal passion play, an idea of paradise and what it means to be divided from our source of love and life. LINDA: A card which usually evokes alarm when it appears is The Tower. In your class on symbols, you refer to this as having ‘oblique symbolic meaning’. What do you mean by that? From the Albano-Waite Tarot KATRINA: Yes, that’s right…I’m quoting from Arthur Rosengarten’s book, Tarot and Psychology, where he’s talking about the symbolic dimensions of the Tarot. He says that each of the 78 cards ‘carries a specific, differentiated, discrete, and oblique symbolic meaning emanating, as Buddhist teachers are fond of saying, ‘from its own side”.’ The Tower is an excellent example of this. The symbolic meaning of the card is expressed ‘obliquely’, that is, not in a direct way. Rather it emerges ‘from its own side’ complete in itself and not just a sum of the all the discrete symbols within the image – the crown, the colors of the clothing, the free-flowing hair, the Yods, the jagged rocks, the lightning bolt just to name a few. The Tower can be read as a symbol of timing with the message of ‘Transform or die…now’. It has an immediacy that is out of our control and takes us to a place of no return. Whether this is alarming or not is due less to this symbolic action and more to our attachment to life being the same as before. LINDA: Would it be fair to say that the images in many contemporary Tarot decks tend to use a mixture of conventional and personal symbols? KATRINA: Yes…keep in mind that the level of symbols can be personal, conventional, archetypal or universal. There is the intention of the artist, but there is also the impression of the viewer of the cards. One person’s archetypal symbol can be another person’s personal symbol. My advice is to be open to whatever level of meaning is most useful to the querent. LINDA: You take a particular interest in sexual symbolism and meaning in Tarot. What led you down this path? KATRINA: A variety of influences…first, just being human and knowing that sex is an essential aspect of life. Tarot is also a beautiful reflection of life with life and sex intimately intertwined. Sex is not only a physical act, but a symbolic relationship. Male and female figures in the Tarot are placeholders for the details that are associated with masculine and feminine qualities, such as action and passivity. Much of the Tarot is what I would call a ‘Dance of Duality’, portrayed with objects, such as a caduceus, with the double helix/snakes dancing around the shaft, or with implied movement, such as the yin-yang symbol, spinning black and white waves with a drop of each within the other. From the Albano-Waite Tarot LINDA: Can you give us some examples of sexual symbolism in the Waite-Smith deck and how picking up on this aspect of the imagery adds to an understanding of the cards? KATRINA: Just look at The High Priestess….as an archetype, she is pure yin, receptive energy, the virginal spirit. The specific symbols that illustrate her deeply feminine nature are the central full moon in her headdress (clitoris), and the water fall (juicy fluid flowing from her vaginal opening), the + cross over her heart (intersection of male and female polarities, the way to a woman’s sex is through her heart), the two blue sides of her robe (inner labia), and the two columns (outer labia). Now look at The Magician….what is that phallic symbol in his hand and what is he going to ‘manifest’ with it? King of Wands from the Abyssal tarot LINDA: Let’s move to examples of sexual symbolism in contemporary decks. KATRINA: Shelly Corbett has graciously shared a card from her amazing underwater photography deck, Abyssal Tarot. I would categorize this as a sensual deck. The movement implied by the floating objects and the bodies in these cards may bring up emotions for you as you look at them. LINDA: Because there’s no single way of responding to the symbolism contained in an image, what sort of advice do you have for people who are in the process of learning to read Tarot and Oracle cards? Should they spend a lot of time reading up on symbols or should they simply go with their gut reaction to the images? KATRINA: Either or both, depending on the preferred style of the reader. For those who are interested in a well-rounded knowledge of their oracular tools, I suggest studying every possible approach to the understanding and meaning of your chosen oracle, developing a personal journal of observations and notes. As for which comes first, that is also a matter of individual style. My preference is for readers to exercise their intuition and go with a first impression, then immediately go to a reference book to compare their impression with the intended meaning of that image. Both are valid and often complement each other in some way. I don’t stop there… I then suggest that you take this awareness into a walking meditation for the day, noticing how what you noted about your oracle appears in everyday life. Now go back to your journal and bring your ‘experience’ of the lesson on this oracle back together with your knowledge and intuition. This helps you develop a more personal familiarity with your chosen oracle, integrating the many levels of symbolism I’ve talked about.

TWO AMAZING TAROT DECKS

– Raising fund for  cancer projects –

What an honor it has been to be invited to contribute to two Tarot card projects, both designed to support cancer research. Although I am not known for my artwork, it is a secret tool I use when creating my own projects, so I jumped at this opportunity to share my wares, so to speak. On a side note, I love the way our Tarot Tribe steps up to the plate and supports community projects like these, modeled beautifully by the two project coordinators and their cooperation with each other, far from the dominant capitalist model of competition and scarcity consciousness.

Please support both of these projects which have targeted specific cancer research programs to donate profits from sales of these products:

TRIUMPH OF THE TAROT project

First invitation came from Andrew McGregor for his Triumph of Life Tarot project, a complete deck with each card created by a different luminary in the Tarot world. I selected “V The Hierophant” because many Tarot people shy away from this card, although I know it carries a powerful message for those seeking to heal through a cancer diagnosis. My only condition for accepting this opportunity was that I be able to write my own text and attach my personal interpretation of the card to the project, for which I was given a green light…thank you!!

Triumph_of_Life-Hierophant-visionWhen designing a Tarot card, the process starts with meditating on the meaning of the card and the message it wishes to share. Often, as with my “Hierophant” card (see below) these messages come from my dreaming mind, as if the Divine is speaking directly to and through me. I sketch a mock card, sometimes adding the symbols and definitions that I associate with those symbols, until my internal picture has a simple representation for me to continue my research. My style is more photographic and montage, so my search for symbols and images that best represent the image in my mind takes me through hundreds of found and personal pictures, until I narrow the field to the ones that best match my internal design.

With the Hierophant, my dreaming mind clearly wanted to see Leonardo da Vinci’s “Vitruvious Man” in the center of a tree. This reason was not clear to me until I started writing and researching the history behind this image, which I had recently viewed through the eyes of Salvador Dali’ at the museum dedicated to his work in St. Petersburg, Florida during my 2015 Tarot Tour (link to my blog post on this adventure). Of course, being a “Forest Mystic” and Petite Lenormand reader, the symbolism of the tree is very prominent in my mind and heart, just needed to find the best tree to match the guidance I received from the Divine.

Here is my “V The Hierophant” from the Triumph of Life Tarot Project, followed by an extended description of the meaning of this card:

Triumph-Hierophant-KatrinaWynne.copyright

Description & Dedication:

PURPOSE – life mastery

ARCHETYPE– teacher / student

ROLE – spiritual guide or authority

LIFE EVENT – education, school, training

SYMBOL – high priest, pope, spiritual teacher / PENTACLE – head, two arms, two legs = 5

NUMEROLOGY – “5” – challenge, opportunity to learn about life and grow

ASTROLOGY – constellation of Taurus; earth, fixed

ESSENCE – conduit for spiritual guidance. Received, then translated and shared with others

ENERGY – two-way energy – first the yin energy (feminine/receptive) receives guidance from a higher dimension/source, taken into the heart and meditated upon, then, the yang energy (masculine/projective) sends this guidance out to the world.

ENERGY – “Chakra” energy – the Hindu seven turning wheels of energy that correspond with major processes of the body, represented here by the seven colors of the visible color range, the rainbow. They have been linked to specific glands, nerve plexuses along the spinal cord, and function to vitalize the human body, from physical existence, through emotional connection, mental awareness, to spiritual merging. In Anatomy of the SpiritCaroline Myss describes the role of chakras: “Every thought and experience you’ve ever had in your life gets filtered through these chakra databases. Each event is recorded into your cells…”.

IMAGERY “Tree of Life” – Petite Lenormand card #5 – The Tree is a symbol of health or things that grow slowly and are stable. It sometimes points to one’s “family tree” and genetic, social, or karmic issues that are passed onto the next generation.

IMAGERY “Tree of Life” – earthly level – trees represent growth and stability. The tree’s leaves absorb the energy/light of the sun, then processes it through photosynthesis, transforming this pure form of energy into life nourishing chemicals, dispersed through the release of oxygen in the atmosphere, and fuel to its roots. Oxygen is necessary for every breath of life we receive as human beings. The tree’s root system reaches deeply into the earth, creating stability while networking with life below the surface, communing with other trees and living organisms. We humans are also nourished by the communities we join, with mutual support benefiting all.

IMAGERY “Tree of Life” – metaphysical level – the World Tree is a sacred symbol that appears in many major religious and spiritual traditions. In Judaism and Christianity, it is the second tree in the Garden of Eden, representing our spiritual goal in life, the return to the Kingdom of Heaven. It is the Bodhi Tree under which Siddhartha meditated (yin – receiving spiritual guidance), reaching enlightenment as the Buddha, then sharing (yang – sending) the Four Noble Truths as a teaching to release us from suffering in life. In Norse mythology, Odin hung from Yggdrasil where he received the sacred alphabet, what are called Runes. In many Native American spiritual traditions we have “Grandmother Tree” who symbolizes life as the seven sacred directions: east, south, west, north, above, below, and within.

IMAGERY “Tree of Life” – universal level – in his biological-spiritual thesis, The Purposeful Universe, former World Health Organization biologist and cancer researcher, Carl Calleman, presents his understanding of our cellular connection with the universe. Just as we have a World Tree on Earth, there is a Universe Tree that represents the center of our universe from which signals are sent, then received by individual cells, specifically by the little understood centrioles, whose biological function is to trigger cell division. Calleman’s study of the Mayan calendar and vast knowledge of biology merged as a theory of evolution that is both Darwinian and Divine.

IMAGERY “Vitruvius Man” – intended meaning – Leonardo da Vinci drew his famous sketch of the Vitruvius Man as a study of the “Proportions of Man.” This Renaissance image blends art with science, in an attempt to connect humans to nature. Da Vinci believed the workings of the human body to be an analogy for the workings of the universe. Katrina’s note…this graphic came to me in a dream and informed me it specifically wanted to be in this Hierophant card for the Triumph of Life project.

IMAGERY “Vitruvius Man” – symbolic meaning – humans, with our head, two arms and two legs, are symbolized in the five-pointed star surrounded by a circle, the magic symbol of the pentagram, or pentacle. In Tarot, the pentacle represents the element of earth and speaks to material reality…the five senses. Traditionally symbolized by a coin, it is concerned with health and wealth.

STORY – The Hierophant in the Triumph of Life is a spiritual guide who draws from the wisdom of the World and Universe Trees. Once this wisdom is received, it is integrated, then wisely shared with others.

INTERPRETATION – Number five is a challenge, a lesson about life, which tends to appear in an uncomfortable package in order to demand one’s attention. This is an opportunity to grow, but only if one is willing to meet the challenge head on. Resistance to learning new lessons may be a source of pain. Buddha taught that all suffering comes from our attachment to specific desires and projections. If one approaches the Hierophant card’s lesson with an open mind and heart, the life lesson will be more easily accepted and integrated. You may benefit from seeking spiritual guidance from a hierophant, a spiritual guide or authority, or medical professional that you have researched and respect. You may embody the hierophant, being asked to step up and teach others what you have learned.

GUIDANCE – Seek a wise and spiritual guide from whom you can receive the life lessons you need to learn. If you are this spiritual guide, share your experience and knowledge with those who need your wisdom.

ACTION – Study the lessons you need to learn at this time to support your life in a holistic (body/mind/spirit) way. This may entail research on the issue, consultations with recognized authorities, guidance from spiritual or religious leaders, interviews with individuals on their success stories. Meditate, pray, receive guidance and allow it to challenge you to grow.

Troi-EarthHeaven06DEDICATION – Troi Tiberius (May 1, 1962 – January 18, 2012) was my dearest friend, a spiritual brother, and a true Hierophant. His sweet poems of the Beloved expressed the sharing of his soulful heart and Buddhist sensitivities. Troi was a Taurus, like myself, and embodied all the wonderful qualities of an empowering Hierophant, ready to share his spiritual wisdom with whomever was willing to receive. Being a fine cuisine “foody” and celebrated master pastry chef, a four-course breakfast was his favorite meal. I fondly remember him teaching me how to bake fabulous chocolate chip cookies, and the time he surprised me by creating a custom tofu lemon pie for my birthday, a significant stretch from his award winning triple chocolate cake extravaganza. Each morning I drink tea from my classic English china cup in honor of his dear spirit, which I carry, always, in my heart. Sadly, he died due to lack of proper treatment for his stomach cancer. His family and I shared a deeply meaningful ceremony, then buried his ashes on my land in the Earth Heaven Cemetery, surrounded by beautiful trees and colorful rhododendron bushes. My body looks forward to resting near his some day.

TAROT PINK FOR CANCER project

TarotPink-Tower-KatrinaWynne.4.copyright

When Ron Leong reached out to me, personally, to contribute a card to his Tarot Pink project collective, originally meant to be a Tarot eCard app deck, I was pleasantly surprised and delighted to join his mission, which has now expanded to a printed deck as well. I latched onto my first pick, “XVI The Tower”, an archetype near and dear to my spirit. Kali is the Hindu goddess of Life-Death-Life and has a special place on my altar, covered with ashes of sacred pujas and the cremation ashes of loved ones. We commune daily about the beauty of life and the inevitability of death.

The word count limit to describe this complex image and its powerful message was too small for me, so I was determined to provide a more in-depth explanation here.

Published In-Depth Card Meaning:

Kali destroys the demon, but at a price…each drop of blood creating new demons. Shall she kill all in sight, including the innocent, or will she take a balanced approach, inspired by her husband, Shiva, prostrated in compassionate surrender to her rage? Transform or die now…fear or faith.

When facing adversity, as in the Tower card, Kali models two approaches. Initially, she intended to kill the demon, only to find that it had multiplied, much like cancerous cells that have spread. You may choose to stomp out the cancer (under right leg) by surgically removing the malignant tumor (upper right hand), poisoning it with chemotherapy (lower right hand), and/or eradiating the life force out of it (red flames in background). You may be victorious, if this does not kill you, the innocent in Kali’s path.

Shiva offers another path, where neither Kali, nor cancer, is feared, or destroyed. He “cools” his beloved’s rage (blue flames in background) with his dispassionate prostration (under left leg), and tames her blood-lust desire (cobra) with his complete presence, shocking her into a new, peaceful awareness.

Kali and Shiva remind us that we are meant to live in balance with all, including the demons of life. A body-mind-emotion-spirit approach, a radical new lifestyle where healthy and healing habits are established, keeps the cancer cells that are already present in every body in a cooler, less inflamed, state.

Loving and having compassion for the entire Self is the root of all healthy relationships. Old ego attachments about who you are or thought you should be are required to die, immediately. Time for a radical change. Whether you say goodbye to your hair, your breasts, or other parts of your physical body, your daily coffee, sugar, or other forms of desire, you are more than these parts or substances…you are a whole universal being. Bring faith, not fear, into making your lifestyle and treatment choices. Like Shiva, meditate upon life-sustaining options, yet like Kali, be ready to act on change now.

Description & Dedication:

PURPOSE – purification from materialist concept of life

ARCHETYPE – liberation – from the ashes, the phoenix will rise

ROLE – catastrophic transformer

LIFE EVENT – accident or disaster

TIMING – unexpected, sudden change, “transform or die…now”

SYMBOL – Lightening-struck Tower of Babel, Kali & Shiva, phoenix

DECISION – fear or faith

NUMEROLOGY – “16/7” – “The 7 soul is learning to set aside the rational, concrete mind of the lower self…long enough to hear communications from the universal mind.” Lynn Buess Forever Numerology

ASTROLOGY – planet Mars; rousing force, combative, action, self-defense, rules the head through Aries

ESSENCE – dissolution of old beliefs, patterns, surrender ego attachments for the liberation of consciousness

ENERGY – kundalini energy is driven up the spine to the head, for final illumination.

IMAGERY “Kali” – black = pure consciousness, all-embracing and transcendental nature. Says the Mahanirvana Tantra, “Just as all colors disappear in black, so all names and forms disappear in her.” Kali is the fearful and ferocious form of the mother goddess, called upon to do battle with evil forces. In the battle, Kali was so enraged in the killing spree that she got carried away and began destroying everything in sight. Kali’s garland of fifty human heads stands for the fifty letters in the Sanskrit alphabet, symbolizing infinite knowledge. Her girdle of severed human hands signifies how man creates karma, now liberated from the cycle of karma.

IMAGERYShiva” – consort to Kali, (Shiva is called Kāla— the eternal time — the name of Kālī, his consort, also means Time, as in “time has come” or Death (of the ego). Shiva has a meditative, calm, dispassionate presence, with passive engagement, yin to Kali’s yang energy. To stop Kali’s blood lust, Shiva threw himself under her feet. Shocked at this sight, she stuck out her tongue in astonishment, instantly cooling her rage, putting an end to her homicidal rampage.

IMAGERY “Raktabīja” – the demon, had an advantage that whenever a drop of his blood fell on the ground, a duplicate Raktabīja would be born at that spot (rakta=blood, bīja=seed; “he for whom each drop of blood is a seed”).

IMAGERY “sword” – used by Kali to remove the head of the demon, resulting in blood drops creating duplicate demons. The surgeon’s scalpel ready to remove the tumor, breast, or other body parts…but will the cancer spread like the drops of the demon, creating more cancer and tumors.

IMAGERY “chemo bag” – according to the Mayo Clinic staff…Chemotherapy is a drug treatment that uses powerful chemicals to kill fast-growing cells in your body. Chemotherapy is most often used to treat cancer, since cancer cells grow and multiply much more quickly than most cells in the body. Many different chemotherapy drugs are available. Chemotherapy drugs can be used alone or in combination to treat a wide variety of cancers. Though chemotherapy is an effective way to treat many types of cancer, chemotherapy treatment also carries a risk of side effects. Some chemotherapy side effects are mild and treatable, while others can cause serious complications. Explained on Cancer.net, there are common side effects of chemotherapy, some which may lead to death: fatigue, pain, sores in mouth and throat, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, constipation, blood disorders, nervous system effects (burning, achy muscles, loss of balance, headache, visual problems, difficulty hearing, etc.), changes in thinking and memory, sexual and reproduction issues, appetite loss, hair loss, and long-term side effects (permanent organ damage to heart, lung, liver, kidneys, cognitive functions) with a high risk of developing second cancers later in life.

IMAGERY “cancer cell” – Cancer.gov defines cancer cells…here is a summary: In all types of cancer, some of the body’s cells begin to divide without stopping and spread into surrounding tissues. In general, cancer cells have more genetic changes, such as mutations in DNA, than normal cells. Many cancers form solid tumors. Cancerous tumors are malignant, which means they can spread into, or invade, nearby tissues. In addition, as these tumors grow, some cancer cells can break off and travel to distant places in the body through the blood or the lymph system and form new tumors far from the original tumor. Cancer is a genetic disease—that is, it is caused by changes to genes that control the way our cells function, especially how they grow and divide. Genetic changes that cause cancer can be inherited from our parents. They can also arise during a person’s lifetime as a result of errors that occur as cells divide or because of damage to DNA caused by certain environmental exposures (chemicals, such as in tobacco smoke, and radiation).

IMAGERY “red flame – radiation” – red~yang~rage, Cancer.gov explains that Radiation therapy kills cancer cells by damaging their DNA. It can either damage DNA directly or create charged particles (free radicals) within the cells that can in turn damage the DNA. Cancer cells whose DNA is damaged beyond repair stop dividing or die. When the damaged cells die, they are broken down and eliminated by the body’s natural processes. Radiation therapy can also damage normal cells, leading to side effects.

IMAGERY “blue flame – calm” – blue~yin~cool, Shiva, in deep meditation, brings a calm atmosphere to the enflamed Kali, shocking her out of her rage by prostrating himself under her left foot, bringing balance back to the world. A cool body-mind-emotion-spirit is prepared to examine the imbalance of the system, be it physical or energetic, to address this issue from a holistic perspective.

STORY – XVI The Tower in the Tarot Pink for Cancer is embodied by Kali, the Hindu mother goddess of time & death. Just as the Tarot’s Tower card warns of immediate destruction, Kali’s blood lust rampage symbolizes the growth and spread of cancer cells. Left unchecked, they will destroy all life, indiscriminately. It is time to make an immediate change, either through the radical eradication process, popular in western medicine (surgical removal of tumors, chemotherapy, and/or radiation therapy) for treating the symptoms of cancer, or to make a complete lifestyle change, integrating holistic medical and health therapies that address the cause of the cancerous growth, life out of balance. Sometimes these two approaches or integrated quite successfully.

INTERPRETATION – immediate change is necessary, best addressed with fearlessness and faith. Fearlessness for you are ready to transform your life, making necessary improvements in the face of destruction. You now realize your old life is gone. To hold on to your old identity will swiftly bring you to death’s door. As the Tower cries, “Transform or die, now.”

GUIDANCE – Act now, be fearless, have faith, based on broad research and perseverance of spirit.

ACTION – Radical and complete change is necessary. In the case of cancer, whether you choose to remove a breast, or accept the chemotherapy/radiation treatment that will take your mane, immediate action is paramount. In the alternative, you may choose the other path, a body/mind/emotion/spirit approach. Be prepared to completely change your lifestyle, including the foods you eat, habits of mind, freeing up your emotions, and seeking medical solutions that are more holistic and specific to your unique physical needs. Why wait until you receive a diagnosis of cancer…make beneficial lifestyle changes now!

DEDICATION – Three dear friends in my small community have died from brain cancer. One has his cremated ashes upon my Kali altar. All three chose the western medical model of treating their cancer with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy…with no success.
